Synopsis:

The Sourcefire VRT is aware of multiple vulnerabilities affecting systems using the Microsoft Windows Operating System some of which could allow an attacker to execute code or cause a Denial of Service (DoS) on an affected system.

Details:

Microsoft Security Advisory (927892) Microsoft systems using the XMLHTTP 4.0 ActiveX control may be prone to a vulnerability that could allow a remote attacker to execute code of their choosing on that host.

Rules to detect attacks targeting this vulnerability are included in this rule pack and are identified as sids 8727 and 8728.

Microsoft Windows NAT Helper DoS CVE-2006-5614: Microsoft Windows systems suffer from a programming error that may allow a remote attacker to cause a Denial of Service attack against affected systems. The problem lies in the processing of DNS records on machines that are acting as Internet gateways which also perform Network Address Translation (NAT). When an affected host receives a malformed DNS query the system is unable to process the request and a DoS condition arises.

Rules to detect attacks targeting this vulnerability are included in this rule pack and are identified as sids 8709 and 8710.

Microsoft Security Advisory (927709) CVE-2006-4446: The Microsoft ActiveX control for the WMI Object Broker bypasses ActiveX security controls on some systems. This may allow an attacker to execute code of their choosing on an affected system.

A rule to detect attacks targeting this vulnerability was released on September 1st 2006 and is identified as sid 8053.

The Sourcefire VRT has also added and modified multiple rules as a result of continuing research into multiple vulnerabilities.
